The annual Healthy Workplace Awards were handed out last week at a virtual event.
While business owners and not-for profit organizations accepted their awards for the first time in its 18 year history over a web-based conferencing system, this was not the only major change to be prompted by the COVID-19 public health protection measures.
In previous years, organizers hosted the healthy workplace award breakfast to recognize local workplaces for implementing comprehensive workplace wellness activities and initiatives to promote positive lifestyle behaviours among their staff.
As a result of COVID-19 and the exceptional efforts of local businesses to keep employees and the public safe, the Healthy Workplace Awards organizers shifted focus to acknowledge the challenges and opportunities associated with safe reopening and operations, while continuing to prioritize public health.
Three key areas were highlighted in the awards application criteria for 2020, which included Health and Safety, Mental Health Promotion, and Organizational Social Responsibility during the pandemic.
