The Catholic school board has dismissed 44 students from St. Peter Catholic Elementary School in Tecumseh due to a high risk exposure to COVID-19.

The board says 20 of the students were from one class/cohort. An additional 7 students from the Latchkey child care program and 17 students from a bus cohort were also dismissed.

The board’s website lists the case as from a student.

The school board says nurses from the Health Unit were at the school Tuesday morning to provide information and support to parents of students from the affected cohorts as they were being picked up from school.

“We have been working with the health unit by providing lists of students and staff who may have been directly affected, ” said Stephen Fields, Communications Coordinator for the board. The health unit is contacting any individuals, both students and staff, who may have been affected, and will give directions for them to follow.”

Fiends says that a voice message to the entire school community was sent home Tuesday afternoon to reassure parents that if they have not been contacted by the health unit, they have not been identified as close contacts and their children may continue attending school as usual. Follow-up letters will also be sent home with all students.

“We have advised parents to continue to monitor their children for symptoms of COVID-19 each morning and to keep them at home and call your healthcare provider for further direction if they are ill,” Fields said.

The school remains open.
