The area has its first confirmed case of COVID-19 at a local school.
The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board is reporting one active case at Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School in Amherstburg.
In a letter to parents, principal Brian Marenchin announced the school recently received information about a confirmed case of COVID-19 in one of the school’s class cohorts.
“We have recently received information about a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) for a student of your child’s class cohort. As a member of the cohort, your child has been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case,” Marenchin wrote. “We are working closely with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit to ensure that all precautions and measures are taken to keep our students and staff healthy and safe.
“The WECHU is dismissing the cohort,” Marenchin wrote, “and we will contact you to provide follow up and further directions for your child including guidance on testing and self-isolation.”
The confirmed case has resulted in one classroom closure, but the school remains open. The letter says students will continue to learn online during their isolation period.
The Catholic board previously announced they will not identify the students or staff members who test positive for COVID-19.
Marenchin’s letter advises parents to continue to monitor their children for symptoms and if the exposure is considered high-risk, to be tested for COVID-19.
