Windsor’s second COVID-19 assessment centre will be opening later next month.

Officials from Windsor Regional Hospital say they recently received approval from Ontario Health to open an assessment centre at the hospital’s Met Campus.

“We need to plan in advance in the event that demand for testing further increases with possible Wave 2, more individuals returning to work, particularly if and when the region moves to Stage 3, as well as any openings in the educational sector,” said WRH President and CEO David Musyj. “This new location gives individuals two options, allows for easier access to a higher level of care or diagnostic exams, if needed, and will help reduce wait times on days where interest in receiving a test significantly stretches our staff resources and capacity.”

The hospital’s Ouellette Campus assessment centre opened on March 16th and daily volumes hit a record high on July 20th. Four hundred and fifty two people were tested that day and the hospital says nearly 20,000 people have visited the assessment centre since it opened.

Testing has been increasing in recent weeks, according to hospital officials, due to requirements for testing prior to visiting long-term care homes, as well as those needing a test prior to surgeries requiring general anesthesia.

Officials say the details are still being worked out, but the new assessment centre will likely be located in an outdoor temporary structure near the emergency department at the Met Campus.

It’s anticipated the new assessment centre will be open by late August.
