Windsor’s riverfront was filled Sunday afternoon with support, signs, cheering, and masks-wearing participants for the Black Lives Matter Balloon Memorial.
The gathering attracted reportedly over 1,000 people from the area. Local residents participated in a memorial and walk — one of many events over the weekend aimed at spreading awareness.
Once gathered, organizers handed out a small amount of black balloons to float — which they pointed out will be disposed of properly afterwards and not released — as well as masks and sanitizer as social distancing was encouraged.
The large group reinforced their solidarity and unity with the Black Lives Matter movement as total silence blanketed the crowd for 8 minutes and 46 seconds when prompted, commemorating George Floyd. A walk followed as many participants brought signage to make their trek down the route.
“As a neighbouring country of the US, it’s important that we show our international support of the Black Lives Matter Movement, as it is a global one,” said organizers on their event listing.
