Local Expert Blog: 5 Ways To Celebrate Differently

If there is one thing quarantine has put a damper on it is celebrations. Many of us were and are not able to join family and friends to commemorate birthdays, graduations, weddings, and births, to name a few. However, don’t let it dim the pleasure you feel for these moments of joy and anticipation.

Instead, consider these creative opportunities and alternatives that could become new traditions.

Fun and games

If someone in your family is soon-to-be celebrating a milestone birthday (or any birthday), think about renting some games to mark the occasion! For example, if someone turning 19 (21 in America), set up your own little Las Vegas strip with card games and casino wheels. Or, if they are a sports enthusiast – set up a game of volleyball, basketball, football, golf or whatever else makes them happy. Not a sports fan? What about jumbo Jenga?

Birthday Bonus Idea: Pink Flamingo Charity! Since people can’t stop by for a visit, many people are driving by houses and honking horns. Add a little pizazz to your front lawn with some flamingos!

Delicious eats

Nothing marks an occasion quite like food. Think about it, every moment worth celebrating involves something delicious: weddings, birthdays, graduations, Mother’s or Father’s Day, and so on. Food is what brings us together, so treat yourself by ordering some take-out from your favourite restaurant.

Dinner and a movie

Infuse some good old fashion nostalgia by creating your own drive-in movie theatre. With the weather getting warmer, a lot of us are itching to spend more time outside. Now, don’t worry if you don’t have a projector screen. Put on your DIY hat and hang up that old white sheet that’s been sitting in the back of the linen closet.

Note: If you need a projector, don’t hesitate to ask your local event supplier!

“I’m the king of the castle!”

Speaking of sheets, entertain small children by making a blanket fort! Sometimes it is the simplest things that can generate the most fun, especially on rainy days. String up some Christmas lights, throw some pillows on the floor, and create a little fairy-tale of your own. If the sun is out, take the fun outside! (Maybe have that campout you were planning for this summer in the backyard.)

Mark the occasion.

It isn’t uncommon to record the growth of our children by making marks on a door frame with their age, year, and height. Another fun way to mark the passing of time that your family may love is making a time capsule. The world is looking a little different these days, so why not make a memento out of it to reminisce about at a later date?
