COVID-19 Testing Facility For Agri-Foods Sector To Cease Operations Thursday

An initiative to test seasonal workers in the regional farming community will cease operations Thursday,  but remains available as a viable future option as efforts continue to support COVID-19 testing.

It was on June 9th, 2020, that a team of dedicated staff began voluntary swabbing/testing agri-foods/temporary foreign workers for COVID-19 at the NatureFresh Farms Recreation Centre in Leamington.

Medical teams from across the region were assisted by community groups including the Migrant Worker Community Program to ensure equitable access to care in our community.

The collaboration was successful in creating a model to test workers in a safe, controlled environment that tested over 750 workers who might otherwise not have been tested for COVD- 19.

Officials say thought, with decreasing demand for testing in recent days, the healthcare partners will cease  to operate the swabbing/testing at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre effective Thursday, June 18th, 2020.

“This initiative expanded access to COVID testing to workers within the agri-food sector, doing what we could to break down some of the barriers to testing that previously existed,” said Dr. Ross Moncur Chief of Staff and Interim CEO, Erie Shores HealthCare.

The healthcare partners will continue, on a written referral basis, to attend to positive symptomatic COVID-19 agri-foods/temporary workers to conduct health assessments. At the same time, the existing COVID-19 Assessment Centres at Windsor Regional Hospital (Ouellette Campus) and Erie Shores Healthcare in Leamington will remain open. Hours at both locations are Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm and Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 4pm.
