Heritage Week Coming Up In The Town Of Essex

The Town of Essex is celebrating Heritage Week February 17th to 23rd.

This year’s theme, “Bringing the Past into the Future,” aims to connect residents, with an emphasis on youth, to the incredible history of the Town of Essex.

“Our community is steeped in history, with something new to learn around every corner,” said Laurie Brett, Chair of the Essex Municipal Heritage Committee (EMHC). “Heritage Week is a time to celebrate the Town’s rich and diverse past while learning how we got to where we are today.”

Events planned include:

• On Tuesday, February 18th, Council for the Town of Essex will present Heritage Preservation Awards to two individuals and one organization which have demonstrated a dedication to protecting and celebrating local heritage. The awards will be presented during the Regular Council Meeting starting at 6:00pm at the Essex Civic Centre (360 Fairview Avenue West, Essex Centre.)
• On Wednesday, February 19th, legendary town crier, Seamus Gunn, will present a heritage talk titled “The Birth of Essex” at Essex District High School (244 Talbot Street North, Essex Centre). The presentations begin at 8:30am and 10:00am. Gunn will bring his engaging first-person story-telling style to students at the high school. The Town will also present Youth Community Heritage Preservation Awards to two students. Members of the public interested in attending are asked to pre-register by calling 519-776-7336 ext 1128.
• On Thursday, February 27th, history buffs are invited to join local historian Richard Herniman, at the Harrow Early Immigrant Research Society (243 McAffee Street, Harrow,) for a presentation titled “Harrow’s Hidden History” starting at 1:30pm. Herniman will present surprising facts on the background of the community of Harrow, how it developed over the years, and discuss a number of important historical figures. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
