Windsor Police are taking part in the Ontario wide 2019 Drive Safe! Campaign that is designed to help keep area roadways among the safest in North America.
This year’s theme is “Distracted Driving Ruins Lives. Drive Safe!”
During the campaign, the Windsor Police Service Traffic Enforcement Unit will be active on local roadways, promoting the campaign and enforcing roadway safety.
“Drivers engaging in text messaging on a cellular phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision, or near collision, compared to non-distracted drivers,” said Inspector Andrew Randall.
Police say that research has shown that texting while driving is six times more likely to cause a collision than driving under the influence of alcohol.
They say that 80% of collisions and 65% of near collisions have some form of driver inattention as a contributing factor.
