Enrollment numbers for the 2016 school year have been released by the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board and officials don’t expect teacher layoffs as a result.

Communications Coordinator Stephen Fields says the board has 12,985 elementary students, and 7,284 secondary students enrolled. Last year at this time, the board had 13,021 elementary and 7,271 secondary students. Fields says the board expects elementary registrations could climb as high as 13,100 as the board accepts registrations all year.

“In an era when every board in Ontario other than those in the GTA are experiencing declining enrollment – and considering that we had originally projected a decline of about 800 students – breaking even or seeing a slight increase is remarkably good news,” says Fields.

“The especially exciting news is this means that we have been able to hire 41 new teachers (24 secondary; 17 elementary),” he said. “We expect that by our final re-organization day on Sept. 23, we will have no teachers on lay-off. By way of comparison, we had almost 70 teachers on lay-off last year.”
