Work is starting on St. Clair College’s new John A. Strasser Student Life Centre.
The $3.35-million project will feature an entertainment/stage area along with a complex for student socialization and relaxation.
Work began in the spring on the 10,000sqft, two-storey project which displaces an existing outdoor courtyard near the main campus’ cafeteria.
St. Clair President Patti France said the new student centre is an important amenity to relax and recharge students so that they can balance their class work.
France said the idea came after the college surveyed students about lacking amenities on campus.
With the project already underway, Vice President John Fairley said they didn’t hesitate to start the project when approval was given. “When we get the green light we start building.”
Dr. John Strasser, St. Clair’s former president, was on hand to say thank you for the namesake. Strasser thanked donor Anthony Toldo and noted the well-known local philanthropist used to play in a band in St. Clair’s student center cafeteria some years ago, which brought out chuckles from the crowd.
The new student centre is expected to open in January.
