Windsor Regional Hospital has had to cancel all elective surgeries at the Ouellette Campus due to ongoing sterilization problems.
In a letter to hospital staff, David Musyj, President and CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital says that “although the current situation is sporadic in its impact on surgical instruments a decision has been made by the OR Executive Committee to again err on the side of patient safety until we find the exact source of the problem.”
He goes onto say that “we attempted on Monday to use an outside expert company to do the washing and sterilization of surgical instruments but continued to experience the similar/same issues we were facing internally.”
As a result, until further notice all elective surgeries at Ouellette will be cancelled.
Musyj says that hospital officials are currently conducting tests on the Ouellette sterilization system with international experts and they are continuing to work with equipment manufacturers to continue to rule out any equipment issues .
The hospital says they will also continue to maximize capacity at the Met campus to do as many surgeries as possible there.
