The Windsor Police Auto Theft Unit is sending out a reminder to Windsorites to ensure their parked vehicles are locked and not to leave keys inside. This includes radio frequency fobs for push start ignitions.
Police say that on the weekend alone, over a three-day period between July 15th to July 18th, eleven vehicles were reported stolen to Windsor Police.
Nine of those thefts were the result of owners either:
- leaving keys in parked vehicle with doors locked or unlocked
- leaving keys for one of your parked vehicles inside your second unlocked vehicle.
- leaving an unlocked vehicle with keys inside, inside your garage and inadvertently leaving your garage door open overnight.
- Gardening in the backyard while your front garage door is open, leaving theft opportunities of your keys and possessions.
Police say that along with ensuring your vehicle doors are locked we remind everyone to take your contents with you. If you have to leave belongings in your vehicle try to keep any contents and loose change out of sight. While you are sleeping these thieves, armed with tiny flashlights, are trying door handles and invariably become lucky.
If you see a person looking into vehicles, trying car doors, or acting suspiciously, call the police and they will investigate.
