The City of Windsor is targeting 1000 free residential downspout disconnections in 2016.
Disconnected downspouts release water on to the ground, rather than into the municipal sewer system, which helps to reduce neighbourhood basement flooding and demand for sewage treatment, while at the same time adding sewer capacity.
“We’ve disconnected 3000 downspouts through the years and believe it’s making a difference in the amount of flooding we’re seeing”, said City Engineer Mark Winterton. “Now we need residents to call and set up appointments to make it happen”.
If you want to help reduce basement flooding and sewage treatment costs call 311 or 519-255-2489 to have your downspout appointment locked in.
After registering and booking an appointment, the process would be completed with two visits to your home by City staff. The first visit would be to review your downspouts to determine which ones, if any, can be safely disconnected. The second visit would be to perform the actual disconnection(s).
