Bridge Battle Heads To The Supreme Court Thursday

The battle between the City of Windsor and the Ambassador Bridge heads to the Supreme Court of Canada Thursday.

The Canadian Transit Company owns 114 properties to the west of the bridge that they have purchased over the past decade and boarded up. Their long-term plan has been to tear them down and build a second span.

The City of Windsor alleged that the properties have not been properly maintained and under its by-laws and they issued repair orders against the Canadian Transit Company.

The Ontario Superior Court had sided with the city originally to force the bridge company to repair the homes on Indian Road, but the bridge company appealed to Federal Court which ruled that city by-laws do not apply to the Bridge.

The city then went to the Supreme Court to appeal that decision.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court will be asked if the bridge company is a federal entity exempt from city by-laws.

A final decision will come sometime after Thursdays hearing.
