Transit Windsor is set to the decommission a number of long serving city buses after they recently acquired eight new diesel buses.
Two of the buses date back to being in service since 1986, three from 1989, one from 1990 and two from 1991.
Given the age of the buses being retired, officials say that there is a limited market for resale, so they plan to place the retired buses on an auction website for resale. If they are unsuccessful in selling the retired buses, the buses will be sent to a scrap yard for disposal. Prior to doing so, maintenance employees will salvage any parts from these buses that are in good working condition for use on the two remaining high floor buses.
Since the units that are being retired are high floor buses, Transit Windsor’s accessibility ratio improves from 91% to 98%. The retirement of 8 buses means 110 out of 112 buses are now low-floor buses that have ramps that can be lowered to make it easier for customers with mobility issues to board the bus.
