The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for Windsor and Essex County.
Water Resources Engineer John Henderson says due to the existing wet/semi-frozen ground conditions in the Essex Region, and current forecasts advising of the potential for 20 mm to 40 mm of precipitation over the next 12 hour period, the potential for flooding exists throughout the region especially in low lying areas adjacent to and within floodplain areas on all major waterways.
ERCA is warning that there is also the potential for ice jamming at bridge and culvert locations due to flow within the waterways.
The areas most likely to be impacted by ice issues are the Region’s waterways that outlet into Lake St. Clair.
Predicted forecasts are also calling for winds of 30-35 km/hr out of the east-northeast with the potential for wind gusts up to 50 km/hr.
A possibility of flooding, shoreline erosion and damaging waves exists along the Lake Erie shoreline on the east and north sides of Pelee Island, along the southeast shoreline of the Municipality of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee, and along the Lake St. Clair shoreline including the western portion of the Town of Lakeshore, the Town of Tecumseh and the eastern portion of the City of Windsor. Nearshore areas where field ice exists may have some temporary protection from wave action while open areas will be more susceptible, according to ERCA.
