Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex is asking men from across Windsor-Essex to consider being a mentor.

“There’s no special skill set required,” says Agency Executive Director, John Sutton. “All you need is one hour a week and we can help you make a positive difference in the life of a child right here in Windsor-Essex”.

Nationally, Big Brothers Big Sisters will recruit four female volunteers for every male volunteer. “Thanks to new funding, we have capacity in our Big Brother and Big Sister matches to grow,” states Director of Programs, Rose Culmone. “Boys definitely wait longer than girls to be matched due to the lack of male volunteers,” she added.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex does provide an on-site Group Mentoring Program for children as they wait for their Big Brother or Big Sister Match. “We can and do provide service the moment they are accepted in the program but the kids still want that one to one match,” Sutton said.

There is also a need for applications for girls who would benefit from having a Big Sister. “We’ve made great strides in reducing wait times, especially for girls,” stated Culmone. “As a result we have openings in the program for girls between the ages of 6 and 16 who would benefit from a match.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex matches boys from primarily father-absent families who lack a male influence in their lives with a mature adult male volunteer. Girls are matched based on their need for a consistent friendship from a mature adult female volunteer and can come from any family situation.
