The Town of Essex is inviting input and comments from the public on the draft Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan.

A series of three public open houses will be held in August to share the results of last year’s survey and gather feedback and further input on draft recommendations.

Open Houses will take place from 5:30pm to 7:00pm on the following dates:

• Tuesday, August 4th at the Harrow and Colchester South Community Centre

• Thursday, August 6th at the Essex Centre Sports Complex

• Tuesday, August 11th at the McGregor Community Centre

The draft plan addresses a broad range of issues related to parks, leisure facilities, programs, culture, and overall service. It was presented to Council on June 8 and contains 100 recommendations based on an analysis of public input, facility usage, demographic data, trends, and financial realities.

“Community consultation has been a key component of the master planning process,” says Doug Sweet, Director of Community Services.

“We collected information through a household survey and a sport user group and special interest group survey. We also gave stakeholders an opportunity to attend three public open houses last June and are now holding an additional three open houses to collect comments on the Master Plan recommendations that will help us provide and manage municipal parks and recreation services for the next 10 to 15 years. ”

The Town of Essex has not had a Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan since amalgamation in 1999. Harrow developed a Community Park Development Plan in 1985 and Essex Centre completed an Operational Review for parks and recreation in 1989.

When approved by Council the final Master Plan will form a roadmap for facilities and services complete with timeframes and implementation milestones.
