The Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit is sending out an alert about a recent fraud scam circulating in the community.
Police say that there has been several instances where people have been contacted by telephone and the suspect claims to be a representative from Hydro One or other hydro company. The caller advises the person that their hydro is going to be shut off due to money owed. The caller directs the victim to purchase a prepaid credit card to pay for the outstanding debt.
Police urge the public to be vigilant as hydro companies never request payments with prepaid credit cards.
They also say that the phone display may appear to be a hydro company, but it is in fact a different number. The caller will also provide you with a different phone number to call back. If you have any suspicions hang up with the caller and call the hydro company yourself.
