Windsor Police are sending out a warning about a scam regarding your taxes and the Canada Revenue Agency.
Police say an e-mail is circulating where the sender claims that there is a refund for you and provide you with a link to a fraudulent website. At the website, they attempt to gain personal information from you.
As well, police say that their Financial Crimes Unit is also seeing several instances where victims are contacted by telephone. The caller claims to be from CRA and advises the victim that they owe the government money and that the debt is past due.
They claim that if the debt is not settled immediately, the victim could be in jeopardy with CRA and local law enforcement.
The caller directs the victim to purchase a gift card, usually a Visa card, in the amount of the debt. They have the victim provide the card information to them over the phone.
Police say that the CRA would never contact you by e-mail, or would they ever have you pay an outstanding debt with a gift card.
If you have concerns or suspicions you can call the taxation office at 1-800-267-6999.
