Monday evening, City Council will be asked to approve the consolidation of the Oakwood Community Center into South Windsor Arena.
The community center is currently located at the former Oakwood Public School, which closed several years back and has since reopened as a french language school. The current lease at the school space expires on August 31st, 2016.
City administration says several renovations and site improvements are needed at the arena to merge both facilities. Those include a 13,210 square foot addition to house a new gym, 6 programming rooms, dressing rooms and storage space.
Renovations are also needed to the existing auditorium and front entrance. A reconfiguration of the existing parking lot will add 25 spots and a new parking area will add 60 more.
In addition a an indoor snow melting pit will also be installed to free up space outside in the parking lot where snow and ice from the area are normally left to melt.
The University of Windsor has also approached the city looking to construct a 1,300 foot addition for Varsity women’s locker rooms. This would be at the expense of the university. The area also has a Varsity Men’s locker room that was constructed by the University several years ago.
Total estimate for the project is $4,100,000. If approved construction is expected to start in July and be complete on year later in August 2016.
