Firefighters have shut the water off to a downtown apartment building after a river of water poured out the front doors earlier Sunday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to The Avenue Condominiums at 540 Ouellette around 3pm after neighbours noticed a stream of water gushing out the front doors, over the sidewalk and into the street.
Firefighters found two feet of water in the building’s lobby and determined that the water was coming from upper floors in the building. Building residents who were stuck outside confirmed that the water was rushing down stairwells from an upper floor.
Crews evacuated the neighbouring Manchester Pub after finding that water was coming into that building through the walls.
Enwin was called to the scene and had to shut power off to a wider area so firefighters could isolate the building’s water supply and stop the flood.
One person was treated by EMS after walking in the freezing water for some time.
The water stopped gushing outside around 7pm.
