Longtime local restaurateur Thom Racovitis has passed away.

The owner of the famous downtown Windsor landmark Tunnel Bar B.Q. died early Thursday.

Born in 1942, Racovitis was educated in Baking/Food Chemistry, Marketing and Culinary Arts at Oklahoma State University.

He worked at Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd. as Assistant Executive Chef for the executive dining room and at Windsor’s famous nightclub “The Elmwood Casino”, before starting the second generation of Tunnel Bar-B-Q with his family in 1970.

The restaurant closed last year to make way for an expanded University of Windsor downtown campus.

Visitation is at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home Sunday February 1st, 2015 from 1pm to 6pm. Thom will then lie in state on Monday February 2nd, 2015 at Our Lady of Assumption Church McEwan Campus (711 McEwan Avenue) from 9am until time of mass of the Resurrection at 11am.
