Firefighters, police and building department officials are investigating after the roof of a vacant commercial building collapsed in West Windsor.
Police were called around 6:30pm Tuesday to the corner of University Avenue West and Josephine after a neighbour reported the roof had collapsed following heavy rain.
Firefighters responded, set up their aerial tower and investigated the safety of the building.
The building appeared to not have any current tenants and the only sign on the front read “Lucky’s Travel.” Officials said the building was vacant.
District Fire Chief Bruno Bertucci said firefighters made the decision to notify the City of Windsor’s building department after noticing the rear wall of the structure was sticking out in a bow-like shape.
Bertucci said the building is abandoned and has been for approximately five years. “What we’re doing is making the area safe for residents, and the building department will come to a conclusion about what to do with it.”
“If it’s not structurally sound, they may order a demolition,” he said.
Nobody was in the building at the time of the collapse and there are no injuries.
Police caution tape has been set up around the structure and residents are asked to stay away.
