A new grocery store held its soft-opening Tuesday afternoon in Walkerville.
William’s Grocery staff opened their doors to the public promptly at 1pm and shopkeepers greeted their first customers.
Owner Louise Jones and her husband Bill announced plans for the independent grocery store last September and the two sought input from the community. “We love our neighbourhood of Walkerville. However one of the elements that is missing from this eclectic ‘hood is a walk-to fresh grocer. Folks we talk to seem to agree, so we decided ‘Let’s do it.'”
The store features fresh local produce, deli meats and cheeses, fresh bread and baked goods from Blak’s bakery, milk, juice, soft drinks, dry items, a selection of chocolate bars and gum, sundries and some specialty items.
Owners said on Facebook they plan to soon serve made-on-Erie-Street gelato from Gennaro’s Cafe.
The building was most recently a convenience store. The new shop was renovated over the past eight months and has a bright, lively interior. Staff dress in old fashioned shopkeeper garb.
The owners declined to be interviewed while they’re still busy getting the store in shape and shelves stocked.
On Facebook, they invited the community to come out. “Please stop by and check out what we have to offer at William’s Grocery if you’re in the Walkerville area.”
You can find William’s Grocery store at 1767 Wyandotte Street East.
