A dog recently brought to the Humane Society with severe injuries is now on the road to recovery.
Coco was taken to the Humane Society on May 5th and had a completely fractured back leg.
The Humane Society’s Melanie Coulter says Coco will soon be having the surgery she needs to put her on the road to recovery. But Coco also faces another hurdle.
“Her appearance indicates that she may be of a breed of dog which is banned in Ontario,” says Coulter. “While efforts are underway to treat her injuries, we have also sent away a sample of Coco’s DNA for testing.”
Coulter says many dogs which may resemble one breed are actually a mix of a number of different breeds, and she hopes Coco falls into that category.
If Coco is in fact a mixed breed, Coulter says the dog can move into the Humane Society’s adoption program when treatment is complete.
“Even if her DNA results indicate that she is a restricted breed she will still be able to move on to a new life in another province which doesn’t have breed restrictive legislation. The process of transporting her out of province is expensive, but when it is required to save a dog’s life we don’t hesitate to do so.”
Coulter says the public is invited to help Coco continue on her road to recovery. Donations may be made online at www.windsorhumane.org or in person at 1375 Provincial Road, Windsor.
