Windsor Police have launched a new police boat they’ve named “Defender”.
The new boat’s name was chosen as the winner after Windsor Police held a name the boat contest. Omina Aniza, a grade school student, submitted the winning entry.
Police say Defender is the most advanced security vessel of its kind in Canada and features twin 300 horsepower engines, a state-of-the-art navigation system, a thermal imaging camera, a sonar, a firehose and the interior is climate controlled.
Defender replaces Windsor Police’s old boat, Guardian, which was used for the past 23 years.
Police expect to use Defender for search and rescue operations, cross-border security, dive missions, firefighting operations and first response.
