Police Warn Of Online Tax Refund Scam

Windsor Police are warning of another online scam.
Police say that they have received several complaints about an online tax refund scam e-mail.
Recipients are receiving e-mails that appear to be from “Canada Revenue Agency” with an address similar to refund-tax @ gc.ca The subject line of the email is :Your tax refund online
The e-mail will indicate that an error has been identified in your taxes amounting to a refund of “X” amount of dollars. Usually in the $500.00 – $700.00 range but could be more or less. The email directs you to create a Tax Gateway account in order to credit your bank account with the specified amount. In the body of the e-mail there is a “get started” link which will take you to a separate page containing necessary *fields that are required to be filled in. Included in the fields are Social Insurance Number and bank account information.
Police say then With that information, the fraudsters are now able to apply for credit in your name.
Police warn that Revenue Canada would never require you to submit this type of information to them online.
