A new group of writers have found a place in Windsor’s art scene.
Adventure Worlds is a Windsor-based writing group made up of four locals who have always wanted to be writers. Years of talking, dreaming and scheming brought them together as friends.
In 2013, Christian Laforet, Justin Cantelo, and Ben Van Dongen got together and decided that they were tired of talking about writing and wanted to take a crack at the real thing. It took some trial and error, but after a year they have put up a regular stream of stories on a blog and used the momentum to work on bigger projects.
The name Adventure Worlds was chosen to signify the blog’s eclectic beginnings, open to any genre, with a focus on creating exciting new worlds for their readers. Another writer, Alanna Piche, decided to spend the little free time she had from nursing school to spread her creative wings and became the fourth member of the group shortly after it’s beginning.
Even with other projects on the horizon, the group’s focus is with the blog. They hope to build up a community around the site and share their burgeoning writing with the city.
According to Van Dongen, “before we became a group we each had spent years working on different schemes, trying to jumpstart our writing objectives. Through our separate friendships we formed the group and eventually found an idea that actually worked. We pushed each other to write and founded the blog to keep ourselves honest and share our passion with the world”.
Laforet echoes his partner’s passion for writing. “We like to think of ourselves as Windsor’s up and coming local writers. We have our first year of stories posted on the blog and this year we are working on spreading out more into the community. We are putting together our first zine and two of our writers are working on their first novel. We also want to invite Windsorites to rally behind us and maybe even submit their own writing to the blog”.
The group of four writers, with varying professional and personal backgrounds, defines themselves as Windsorites who are dedicated to producing innovative and creative original works of literary art. The group began as friends, and friends of friends, who loved to talk about writing and other creative projects but never seemed to get much writing done. Forming the group was a means of creatively and professionally pushing one another to improve their writing and writing habits, as well as a search to find an audience. Agreeing to meet daily at local coffee shops to discuss forming a shared blog gave excitement to their goals, acting as the impetus to begin a steady diet of new editions to their blog.
The group welcomes the community to not only follow their stories, but be active readers and writers, encouraging interested local writers to share their work as well. Working on larger projects is also a goal, but always with the desire to stay local in their inspiration. “We are working towards becoming ‘those writers from Windsor’” Van Dongen shares, noting excitement for 2014 and the potential for increased exposure.
