The Greater Essex County District School Board has chosen a new name for the new west Windsor high school that will replace Forster and Century schools come September 2014.

J.L. Forster Secondary School will close at the end of June and students will move to the current Century Secondary School

The Century site will become the new comprehensive high school for west Windsor.

A school naming contest was held back in October where Windsorites were able to submit their suggestions for the new name of the combined high school.

The new comprehensive high school will be named Westview Freedom Academy, and will be located at the current Century site.

“Freedom” was suggested to accentuate the community’s role, as explained by Shukri Abdulle, a Grade 11 student at Forster, “a place that people have come to escape tyranny and fear”, which dates back to the Underground Railroad and continues with many immigrants today. Students and community members also expressed a great deal of pride with their connection to the west-side of the city and wanted that acknowledged in the name.

The board says that students will play a part in the creation of the new school’s identity; it’s nickname, mascot, colours and slogan.

Mrs. Kristie Sweet has been named the school’s first Principal.
