A suitcase that fell off the back of an airport bus is getting the blame for closing down parts of the University of Windsor campus and a stretch of Wyandotte Street.

Police and EMS responded to the corner of Sunset and Wyandotte just before noon and found a ‘suspicious’ red suitcase sitting on a street corner.

Windsor Police and Campus Community Police at the University cordoned off the entire area with tape and prevented anyone from entering the area.

The University of Windsor sent out an Emergency Alert to students and community members stating:

Campus Police and Windsor Police are responding to a suspicious package at Sunset Avenue and Wyandotte Street West. The situation is stable and controlled. Please do not attend in that area until further notice. Authorities will advise you if you need to relocate. Updates will be issued as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. Thank you, UWindsor Alert

Windsor Police say that the suspicious suitcase was identified as belonging to Team Russia from the 2013 International Chuldren’s Games. The suitcase fell off the back of an airport bus that was headed to Pearson Airport in Toronto.

Police say a second piece of luggage, red, containing clothing, is still missing.
