Fire Update From The City Of Windsor

UPDATE: The state of emergency ended at 10pm Tuesday.

Mayor Eddie Francis has declared a state of emergency for the affected area in Windsor which is bounded by E.C. Row to Malden Road to Reaume to the Detroit River.

Officials say that the fire is contained at this time, and is expected to burn for another one to two hours.

Mayor Francis is asking residents within a 1.5 kilometre radius of the Sprucewood Avenue fire to stay in place, with windows closed and air conditioners off. As a precaution, residents in the West Windsor area are being encouraged to take the same precautions.

Dr. Allen Heimann, Medical Officer of Health with the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has received information from CANUTEC. Dr. Heimann reports that some individuals may experience irritation to the eyes and lungs from the smoke. He agrees that it’s best to stay indoors.

For those individuals in the affected area who are not comfortable with staying in their homes, the City of Windsor and the Town of Lasalle are opening up reception centres. These are located at South Windsor Arena in Windsor and the Vollmer complex in Lasalle. Buses are being provided by Transit Windsor and will be available for those who need transportation with pickup at Mic Mac Park in Windsor and Freshco in Lasalle.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area as traffic volumes are very heavy.
