It has been sixty-one weeks since construction started at the site of the future Downtown Windsor Family Aquatic Complex on the Western Super Anchor lands. The once-parking lot is now a sprawling structure rising three stories above the western portion of Downtown Windsor.
Recent construction work has concentrated on a moveable bulkhead and a moveable floor inside the pool, both of which increase accessibility for persons with limited mobility. The moveable floor moves to the top of the pool water at its north end. This allows wheelchairs to roll directly into the pool. The thermal bulkhead reconfigures the pool into a smaller unit in which the water is heated to higher temperatures. On the exterior, glass windows are now in place on the side of the structure which faces the art gallery.
The competitive pool and diving area will be open for the International Children’s Games in August 2013. Work is continuing on budget and on schedule with the official opening of the entire 144,000-square-foot complex scheduled for December 2013.
