Planning is in the works for an official closing party for Windsor Arena.
City Council will be asked next Monday to discuss the planning of a “Signature Celebratory Event” to recognize the official closure of The Barn.
The arena was constructed in 1924 and hosted the Detrit Cougars (which later became the Detroit Red Wings) starting in the 1926/1927 season. The 4400 seat facility also became the home to the Windsor Bulldogs and later the Windsor Spitfires between 1975 and 2008.
With the eventual opening of the Family Aquatic Complex, the City of Windsor determined that the arena would be closed and repurposed. The City approved closing the arena after this year’s ice season.
Council will decide how to plan a closing event between two suggested alternatives: to hold the closing this month while ice is still in the building, or to schedule a closing event later this year, which would require ice to be put back in at a cost of $4,400.
