If you’ve been at the University of Windsor campus lately, you may have noticed that a new, multi-level parking garage is starting to take shape — seven stories above ground.

Newton Parking Structures Ltd started building the parking garage and adjoining Innovation Centre in July and only last week did it become apparent to pedestrians that the building is destined to be of a great height.

Originally announced last December, preliminary work commenced on the project in May and construction crews built foundation and ramps for the main floor of the parking garage.

The parking garage will consist of 1,055 spaces and displaced an existing Faculty and Staff surface lot. Two separate buildings will be constructed as part of the complex and will be connected by a second-storey pedestrian bridge from the Innovation Centre to the parking structure.

The Innovation Centre will front Wyandotte West and will become the new home of Campus Community Police, Parking Services and other campus services. The University plans to centralize some of the existing surface lots on campus into the new parking structure, making the campus a much friendlier pedestrian area.

The new parking garage will add approximately 300 spaces to campus and will bring the total amount of parking spots available up to 3,000.

Both buildings are planned to be completed by Summer 2013.
