Windsor’s brand new pro basketball team, Windsor Express, is one step closer to playing its first game.
City Councillors heard from team representatives this evening on the subject of approving an expense for the purchase of a wood court for the WFCU Centre and a license for the team to operate there.
Councillors ultimately voted in favour of the purchase and the license to much fanfare in council chambers.
The Windsor Express team, part of the National Basketball League of Canada, was officially announced in early August and are expected to play their first game in November.
The team’s name is a tribute to the Underground Railroad, of which Windsor was known as being one of the “last stops” during the slavery era in the United States.
The team will play 20 home games in its 2012-2013 season.
A post on the Windsor Express Facebook page reads “Windsor’s official home is WFCU Centre. Congratulations Windsor. We did it!”
