Firefighters are cleaning up after a house in the 300 block of Elliot Street West in the Midtown area of Downtown caught fire shortly before 9pm tonight.

The fire was visible from Downtown Windsor as a plume of black smoke and due to a southeast wind, thick white smoke filled much of the neighbourhood surrounding Wyandotte and Crawford.

Fire appears to have started on the first floor of the house and spread upward to the second floor and attic. The residents of the house escaped safely.

An inspector has been called to the scene. Damage to the house is significant.
