Mayor Eddie Francis has put the call out to all athletes in the Windsor Essex area aged  12 to 15 years old to consider participation in the 46th International Children’s Summer Games to be held from July 12th to 17th 2012 in Daegu, South Korea.

In August 2011, Daegu successfully hosted the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and is honoured to be the first city in Korea to host the International Children’s Games. The goal of ICG is to enable, develop and advance the meeting, understanding and friendship of youth from different cultures and to advance the spirit of Olympic sportsmanship.

Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in one of seven events including track and field, swimming, tennis, Taekwondo, table tennis, football (soccer) and volleyball.

Team Windsor Essex will join 80 other cities from across the globe, where there will be over 1,500 athletes aged 12-15 years along with coaches, administrators and city representatives. The ICG Games are the world’s largest sporting event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee.

“Windsor-Essex looks forward to participating in the Daegu Games which bring together youth from all over the world for a sporting event that promotes sportsmanship, friendship and cultural understanding. The ICG Games are important to us because like the friendships they forge, they help to galvanize a community, and it is with this same enthusiasm and opportunity we will showcase Windsor-Essex to the world during the summer of 2013”, said Mayor Eddie Francis.

Athletes interested in more information regarding the development of Team Windsor Essex should contact the mayor’s office for additional details.
