After eight years with one design, the City of Windsor has updated the look and feel of its website at citywindsor.ca.
The new website features a fresh design, more intuitive navigation, use of photography, updated search engine technology, accessibility standards, mobile integration and was designed based on five guidelines:
Improved technology: The website is built on a strong and adaptable foundation.
Simple navigation: The navigation of the website has been refined and improved including the addition of a new search engine and a “breadcrumb trail” on every page to indicate where the user is within the context of the site.
Telling our story: The home page marquee and the introduction of social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr) will help the City tell and share its story with the community.
Improved access: Pages are attractive and easy to use on different browsers and will soon be available on various devices (e.g. smart phones). Improved access also means making the website accessible to staff and residents with disabilities, using the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act as the benchmark and guide.
Design with the user in mind: During the research phase, both staff and the public were unanimous in asking for a simplified, uncluttered look and feel. As a result, the new website is designed to be as sleek and user-friendly as possible.
The City also introduced social media features earlier tonight.
