“I used to have a lot of slutty pictures on my Facebook… but now I work in legit media, so I can’t have that stuff,” said ex-Windsorite Lauren O’Neil on MTV Canada’s new show, MTV Creeps.

“I like to describe it as American Idol meets Video on trial – but with Facebook profiles, as opposed to aspiring singers and music videos” says O’Neil. “We creep people with interesting online profiles, talk to them about who they are, make funny comments, give a bit of advice… It’s a fun show. Very MTV.”

Creeps is a show where popular, over-sharing, social-media egotists are creeped (something many people do in this social-media era), examined and put “on trial” by a team of highly charismatic “creeps” themselves.

O’Neil (stylized as O’Nizzle online) is a Chathamite by birth. She made her way an hour south at 17 to attend the University of Windsor and spent her free time doing “a little bit of bartending / figuring out what I wanted to be”.

If you regularly read The Lance, O’Neil hosted a popular YouTube segment called Lance Out Loud where she talked about Campus issues.

Lauren graduated from UWindsor in 2008, went to Western and earned a Masters degree in Journalism before freelancing for blogs, newspapers and magazines. “Combined with my Internships, this was the most valuable thing I did outside of class”.

O’Neil began putting time into her personal blog, which she credits as getting her “noticed by some of the right people”.

Lauren maintains an incredibly-open Facebook profile (open to Creeping), tweets on average 26.2 times per day and has built an enormous following as a web-savvy digital journalist with an easily identifiable persona.

“Since leaving Windsor, I’ve done work for The [Toronto] Star, London Free Press, MTV, MuchMusic, vitaminwater, CosmoTV, Canadian Living, and more online news sites than I can count.”

“My blog has given me some great reporting and event opportunities as well. I met Screech at Comic Con last year! Haha. That was sweet.”

As a former Windsorite (O’Neil currently spends her time at MTV Canada in Toronto), fully integrated with our city’s different scenes, O’Neil says it was “really hard for me to leave Windsor – especially for London”.

“Windsor has grit and character and colour… It’s a fun city and I really connected to the culture there. I miss bartending and my bar family, I miss being able to flit over to Detroit all the time, I miss that rollerblading path by the river, I miss the Detroit skyline, the tree outside of my window on Church St… I miss my school and my friends and the ability to drive and park anywhere!”

Catch Lauren on MTV Creeps tonight (Tuesdays) at 9:30pm on MTV (Cogeco 114 / BellTV 581).
