Tomorrow, Tuesday November 15, 2011 the public is invited to take part in two walking tours through our community to visit organizations that provide services to the homeless or help to feed our community.

The Homeless Coalition of Windsor and Essex County has teamed up with Food Matters Windsor Essex County to organize this special event happening during Homeless Awareness Week taking place November 12 to 20, 2011.  The theme for this year’s Homelessness Awareness Week is Food Security.

“During the walking tour we will highlight some of the organizations that are doing great work to address homelessness and hunger,” says Homeless Coalition Chair Joyce Zuk.  “We want to focus on good work that is being done and this walking tour allows us to do just that.”

“We can no longer hide behind the issues of hunger and homelessness” states Michele Legere, Coordinator of Food Matters Windsor Essex County.  “Engaging the community in a discussion on food security is part of the solution.”

The two tours, one during the day and one in the evening will walk and stop to hear about services and learn more about what is being done.  During the walk, participants can hear about specific issues that face our community around homelessness and hunger.

  • The first tour begins at 2:00 p.m. at Street Health located at 711 Pelissier Street and it will then move to the Downtown Mission, the AIDS Committee of Windsor and then to All Saints Church for refreshments and to hear about programs servicing the county from Youth and Family Resource Network
  • The evening tour begins at 5:00 p.m. at Gino A. Marcus Community Centre at 1168 Drouillard Road and then move on to Drouillard Place, the Blue House, Ford City Community Garden and New Song Church.

For more information or to register for this event, please contact Melanie Banks, Event Coordinator at Family Service Windsor Essex County, 519-256-1831
