The 33rd Annual International Tug Boat Race took place in the Detroit River on Saturday June 25, 2011 at 1:15pm.
The Detroit River was filled with blasting air horns and crashing waves as fourteen tug boats raced from the Ambassador Bridge to Dieppe Park.
Tug boat Sindbad, from Detroit, dominated the race. Sindbads owner, Mark Blancke, says his tug boat rolled through the water well.
“The reason we won is because we had a good start and the boat was positioned well,” says Blancke.
Blancke, the owner of Sindbads Restaurant and Marina in Detroit, has been racing in this event for fourteen years and this is his second time winning first place overall.
The participants in the race take home trophies. “The race is about tradition and bragging rights,” says Summer Fest Organizer, Maggie Durocher.
