Strong thunderstorms moved through Windsor-Essex around 3:30pm this afternoon causing numerous car accidents and setting off fire alarms at buildings around the area.
Police and ambulance responded to a rollover on Ojibway Parkway, in the midst of a major downpour. There were no reports of serious injuries. Two buildings in west Windsor were struck by lightning, including Assumption Church, which set the building’s fire alarm off.
Trees and hydro lines were reported down at Grand Marais and Howard, and multivehicle accidents occured on Northway Street and George Avenue.
The string of thunderstorm cells knocked power out briefly in parts of Windsor, including stretches along Lauzon Parkway where traffic lights are blinking. If you’re driving, exercise caution.
Scattered thunderstorms and rain are expected to continue throughout the late afternoon. If you see severe weather, take shelter. Be safe, Windsorites!
