Windsor’s newest power lifting gym, Empire Muscle, will host an open house February 1st, the day before its Grand Opening on February 2nd.

Run by Amherstburg native Andrew Hedges, Empire Muscle bills itself as the only gym of its kind west of London.

Hedges, 26, is a second-degree black belt through Windsor’s Kihon Karate, and has taught self-defense courses at Maximum Training Centre. This is his first solo business venture.

“The goal of Empire Muscle is to encourage training and participation in Power lifting and Strongman competitions by local athletes (or aspiring athletes),” he says, “and to provide a facility dedicated specifically to weightlifting and strength training.”

Funding is coming from the federal government’s Futurpreneur program, which “provides financing, mentoring and support tools to entrepreneurs.”

Located at 925 Crawford Avenue, Empire Muscle will offer monthly, non-contract memberships as well as personal training services. The gym will also host Strongman competitions where athletes participate in several events involving different aspects of mental and physical strength, speed and endurance.

The first Empire Muscle competition will be held in the spring, and will be a bench press contest with all proceeds going to The Windsor-Essex County ALS Society.

The Open House will run from 11am to 1pm.
