An independent grocery store is being planned for Walkerville and the proprietors are looking for input from the community.

The store, which will be an independent grocery focusing on fresh, local dairy, produce, sundries and specialty items being being planned for 1767 Wyandotte Street East (at Chilver).

The owners say “[We] love our neighbourhood of Walkerville. However one of the elements that is missing from this eclectic ‘hood is a walk-to fresh grocer. Folks we talk to seem to agree, so we decided ‘Let’s do it’.”

Proprietors Bill and Louise have created a survey to get an idea of what hours to operate, what types of products they should stock, whether a small delivery charge (7 mile radius) would be appealing, and what you think they should name their shop.

You can take the survey here, or visit the store’s Facebook Page here.

“However one of the elements that is missing from this eclectic ‘hood is a walk-to fresh grocer.” What about The Market Square and La Stella? These are both in Walkerville and I walk to them all the time. I’m all for new businesses in the neighbourhood, but will this really bring something new to the table?

La Stella is on Pierre and Erie and another 30 minutes or so outside of the neighborhood.

It is not in Walkerville. Technically neither is the market.

In fact the New No Frills is closer Then La Stella.

A small general grocher is a very difficult thing to operate these days. But I think it would prove interesting to see if it’ll work.
