Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital has implemented alternate routes for staff and visitors to the Intensive Care Unit and other areas of the hospital due to elevator disruptions.
Service from two main elevators (located near the coffee bar in the Goyeau lobby) — which routinely allow patients to visit loved ones in the ICU and allow staff to transfer patients from the Emergency Department — has been intermittent. The hospital says there have been delays in getting technicians to the hospital to service the elevators in a timely fashion.
A labour dispute between the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) representing elevator mechanics and contractors and the National Elevators and Escalators Association (NEEA) representing elevator companies is ongoing.
Visitors are advised that they may be asked to wait longer than usual for an elevator as emergency service and patient transport are priorities. Visitors may be asked to take alternate routes when trying to reach loved ones and can ask staff or volunteers for assistance. Most patient areas can be reached from the elevator bank at the Ouellette Ave. entrance.
