Zalev Lands in South Windsor (Google Maps)

The City of Windsor is looking to acquire the Zalev lands in South Windsor.

The City retained Stephen Waque to enter into discussions with representatives of Ferrous Processing and Trading who is the parent company of Zalev Brothers to negotiate a proposed acquisition of the site by the city. One meeting was held with the company on January 20th 2010, but Ferrous was not interested in continuing discussions.

The Zalev property was a hot issue to South Windsor residents during the fall election, and now Council is going ahead to see if it can once again acquire the site.

Ferrous will not allow for environmental testing to take place on the site, nor allow access to its financial records.  In order for City Council to make informed decisions with the costs involved, Mr. Wade has recommended that he be authorized to retain a business evaluator and an environmental consultant to value the business and determine the costs to clean up the site.

The total cost of this is estimated to be $60,000. In the Capital budget of this year council did include a placeholder for $85,000 for this work.

Once this report is complete and comes back to City Council, they will then decide the next move.
