Investigators Determine Cause of April’s Dollarama Fire

Windsor Police have released details as to what caused a massive, multimillion dollar fire at a Dollarama store in the 7600 block of Tecumseh Road East two months ago.
Fire broke out shortly after 8pm on Easter Monday, April 9th, and the structure burned all night.
The next day, what was left of the plaza resembled scorched, twisted pieces of steel and brick.

In a statement released by Investigator Mike Owens of the Ontario Fire Marshalls Office, Owens states that the “investigation has concluded that the fire was intentionally/deliberately set. This determination has been made as a result of the observations of credible eye witnesses who observed the fire in its early stage of fire growth and who were able to provide investigators with a well defined area of fire origin. The fire scene examination further concluded that within the well defined area of fire origin, all potential accidental causes for the fire were credibly eliminated.”
Arson investigators had earlier determined that the fire started four feet off the ground in an aisle in the middle of the store and that the circumstances surrounding the start of the fire were “suspicious”.
The Windsor Police Service Arson Unit is continuing the investigation into the fire and numerous leads and tips are being followed up on. Windsor Police say the public’s assistance is still being requested. Investigators have received information that not all of the customers inside of the Dollarama at the time of the fire have been identified or come forward. They say it is also possible that customers attending nearby businesses may have witnessed something but may not be aware of its importance.
