Windsor-Essex To See $16 Million Community Housing Investment

Windsor and Essex County will see $16,260,566 from the Ontario government to help repair and grow community housing to end homelessness.

“I think we can all agree that the most vulnerable in our society need to be a priority of government efforts in housing,” said Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent Leamington. “We will work with the province and non-profits to address issues like safety, overcrowding and long wait lists.”

Chatham-Kent will also see $3,820,774.

The government also revealed the province’s new Community Housing Renewal Strategy, outlining plans to end fragmentation in the system and streamline application processes to help people who need it most.

The new strategy includes many steps to improve community housing across the province. Tenants will be encouraged to seek opportunities at school and work by removing existing penalties for working more hours or going to college or university. Rent calculations will also be simplified to create predictability for those in need of community housing.

Nicholls added that wait lists will also be reformed to be as minimal as possible. One new policy is the plan to do so is having tenants prioritize their first choice and accept the first unit they are offered while allowing Service Managers flexibility to make exceptions in extenuating circumstances.
